Biography

Hannah, whose maiden name, parents and origins are unknown, (see Research Notes below) was probably born in England about 1615 based on the births of her possible children. Hannah married Lt. Joseph Rogers by 1633 if she was his only wife, and the mother of all of his children.[1][2]

Hannah Rogers was mentioned in her husband's will (dated 2 January 1677/8, inventory 15 Jan 1677/8).[3] She died sometime after her husband, although her death is not recorded.

Joseph Rogers children, births all recorded in Sandwich, but the first six were probably born Duxbury, the last two at Eastham:[4]

  1. Sarah Rogers, b. 6 Aug 1633, d. 15 Aug 1633.
  2. Joseph Rogers, b. 19 Jul 1635, d. 27 Dec 1660; m. Susan Deane 1660.
  3. Thomas Rogers, b. 29 Mar 1638, d. bef. 7 Aug 1678; m. Elizabeth Snow 1665.
  4. Elizabeth Rogers, b. 29 Sep 1639, d. bef. 4 Jul 1679; m. Jonathan Higgins 1660.
  5. John Rogers, b. 03 Apr 1642, d. bef. 10 Aug 1714; m. Elizabeth Twining 1669.
  6. Mary Rogers, b. 22 Sep 1644, d. aft. 19 Apr 1718; m. John Finney 1664.
  7. James Rogers, b. 18 Oct 1648, d. 13 Apr 1678; m. Mary Paine 1670.
  8. Hannah Rogers, b. 8 Aug 1652, d. aft. 18 Oct 1690; m. Jonathan Higgins 1679 (her sister's widower).

Research notes

Disputed parents/surname: There is no 17th Century proof that Hannah Churchman, daughter of Hugh & Ann Mary Churchman, was ever the spouse of Lt. Joseph Rogers, a Mayflower passenger in 1620. The Rogers Society, which has thoroughly researched this question from all original sources available has concluded that the Hannah who married Joseph Rogers was of "Unknown" parents. No maiden name has been found.

Further, in 1644 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, Hannah (Churchman) Winter/Witter and her children were named in the will of her father, Hugh Churchman.[5] Hannah was also named in her husband William Witter's 1659 will.[6][7]

Little is known of Lt. Joseph Rogers' wife Hannah. Her maiden name has been given as Bangs, Harding, and Churchman in various family genealogies, but without proof. She may have been married to a Mr. Thayer before marrying Joseph Rogers.[citation needed]

Her death was given in a previous version of this profile as 2 Jan 1678 citing FindAGrave[8], but no death record or gravestone is found to justify this date.
